The eight Faro supports
- VoiceOver. Every control has a label and, where it has one, a value and a trait.
- Voice Control. Controls carry visible names that match what you'd say to them.
- Larger Text. Faro follows your text size setting, including the accessibility sizes. Layouts reflow rather than clip.
- Sufficient Contrast. Text and controls are built to meet Apple's contrast measure in both looks.
- Differentiate Without Colour Alone. State is carried by shape as well as colour. A chosen filter has a tick, not just a tint. A film you've rated has a filled star rather than an outlined one. A selected option has a filled circle. If you can't tell the colours apart, the shapes still tell you where you are.
- Reduced Motion. If you have Reduce Motion switched on, Faro's transitions go with it.
- Dark Interface. Midnight isn't a dimmed Golden Hour. It's a second palette built to the same contrast bars, and Faro follows your phone unless you pick one outright.
- Captions. The trailers on a film page play in a player that shows a CC control and displays captions when a video has them.
What I can't promise about captions
Those trailers are embedded from YouTube. I don't make them and I don't control what the studio uploaded, so I can't promise every single one carries captions. Almost all of them do. What I'd like is to show you which ones before you press play, and that's coming.
The one Faro doesn't support
- Audio Descriptions. Faro makes no video of its own, and the YouTube player has no audio-description track to offer.
This site works the same way
Seven of those eight can be tried here, on this page, without installing anything.
- Dark Interface. The Golden Hour and Midnight control sits in the header of every page. The site follows your system appearance until you choose one.
- Differentiate Without Colour Alone. That same control uses a sun and a moon, and marks the chosen one as pressed. You can tell which look is active without seeing the tint at all.
- Larger Text. Make the text bigger — ⌘ and + on a Mac, Ctrl and + on Windows or Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size on an iPhone. The page reflows down to a single column. Nothing clips.
- Reduced Motion. Turn on Reduce Motion in your system settings and reload. The transitions stop.
- VoiceOver. Turn on VoiceOver or any screen reader. The page has a skip link, proper headings and named regions, and every screenshot has a description of what it shows rather than a filename.
- Voice Control. Every link and button has a visible name you can say out loud.
- Sufficient Contrast. Every combination of text and background on this site is measured, in both looks.
Captions and Audio Descriptions can't be shown here. There's no speech in anything on this site, so a caption track would be theatre.
Why this one matters to me
I'm a neurologist and neurorehabilitation physician. A lot of my patients rely on accessibility features and assistive technology, and I lead the team that gets that technology to people after a brain injury.
It mattered to me that Faro was something as many of them as possible could use. That meant building it in from the start rather than adding it once somebody complained.
If something doesn't work, tell me
I'm one person building this. There's no accessibility team to escalate to, and there's also nobody standing between you and the person who can fix it.
